India: Christian Cricketer Sanju Samson Thanks God After Match-Winning Knock Sends India to T20 Semi-Final

Sanju Samson thanks the Lord Almighty after his match-winning performance on March 1, 2025, that sent India into the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

Indian cricketer Sanju Samson publicly thanked “the Lord Almighty” after delivering a career-defining performance that propelled India into the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup on March 1.

The 31-year-old opener, who comes from a Latin Catholic family in the southern Indian state of Kerala, scored an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls against the West Indies in a crucial Super 8 clash at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. His innings guided India to a five-wicket victory while chasing a formidable target of 196 runs.

Moments after sealing the win, Samson raised both hands toward heaven, knelt on the pitch, and made the sign of the cross. Earlier, upon reaching his half-century, he had also crossed himself in a quiet gesture of gratitude.

In the post-match presentation, an emotional Samson spoke openly about his faith and the struggles that shaped his journey.

“I’ve always had a very special journey with lots of ups and downs. I kept on doubting myself, can I make it? Can I make it?” he said. “But I kept on believing, and thanks to the Lord Almighty for actually blessing me today. One of the greatest days of my life.”

A Journey Marked by Doubt and Belief

Samson has long been regarded as one of India’s most gifted batters, yet his international career has been marked by inconsistency in selection. Frequently in and out of the national team, he has spent extended periods watching from the dugout.

Reflecting on those years, he said he learned by observing senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma while waiting for his opportunity.

“I was learning from the dugout, watching the greats of the game. I wanted to build a partnership. I never felt that I would do something special like this,” he admitted.

Sunday’s innings proved otherwise.

On a batter-friendly pitch at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium, one of India’s most historic cricket venues, the West Indies had posted a challenging 195/4. The pressure was intense, with the match effectively serving as a quarter-final for India.

Samson responded with maturity and composure. His 97 not out, studded with 12 fours and four sixes, is now the highest score by an Indian in a successful run chase at a T20 World Cup. More importantly, it came at a time when India needed stability, as wickets fell at the other end during the chase.

Faith on Cricket’s Big Stage

For many viewers across India, home to one of Asia’s largest Christian populations, Samson’s open expression of faith resonated deeply. In a country where Christians are a minority, his visible gestures of prayer on one of cricket’s biggest stages stood out.

“It means the whole world to me,” he said after receiving the Player of the Match award. “Right from the day I started dreaming to play for the country, this is the day I was waiting for. I’m very grateful, very thankful.”

India eventually reached 199/5 in 19.2 overs, sealing a five-wicket victory and booking a semi-final clash against England in Mumbai on March 5.

But beyond the statistics and records, the night belonged to a cricketer who spoke as much about belief as about batting.

For Sanju Samson, the innings was not just about power-hitting or milestones. It was about perseverance through doubt, patience through setbacks, and gratitude in success, a testimony, he said, to faith in the “Lord Almighty” who sustained him through the journey.
