India: Daughters of Charity Mark Feast of St. Joseph with Renewed Commitment to Service
The Daughters of Charity marked the Feast of Saint Joseph with devotion and reverence at St. Catherine’s Convent in Raikia, located in Kandhamal district of Odisha in eastern India.
The March 19 celebration began with a solemn Holy Mass, followed by special prayers seeking the intercession of St. Joseph, who is widely venerated in the Catholic Church as the protector of the Holy Family and a model of humility, obedience, and silent service.
Presiding over the Eucharistic celebration, Fr. Purushottam Nayak highlighted the relevance of St. Joseph’s life in today’s world. He urged the faithful, especially the sisters, to emulate the saint’s unwavering trust in God and dedication to duty.
“St. Joseph teaches that holiness is found not in great achievements, but in faithfulness to everyday responsibilities,” he said in his homily. “His life encourages young sisters to serve the poor with love, remain humble, and trust in God’s providence.”
During the celebration, the sisters renewed their commitment to serve the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, drawing inspiration from St. Joseph’s simple yet profound life of faith.
Community prayers and reflections formed an integral part of the observance, as participants reflected on St. Joseph’s role as a guardian and provider, whose actions spoke louder than words.
Sr. Prabhasini Ranasingh, superintendent of St. Catherine’s Orphanage in Raikia, said St. Joseph holds a cherished place in the spirituality of the congregation.
“From the early days of our community, he has been honored as a powerful patron and model, especially for young and junior sisters,” she said.
Founded in 1633 in France by Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac, the Daughters of Charity entrusted their mission to the care of the Holy Family, giving a special place to St. Joseph as protector and guide.
For many young members, his example remains a source of daily inspiration. Sr. Namita Nayak, a junior sister, described St. Joseph as a model of humility, obedience, and quiet strength.
“He served without seeking recognition, followed God’s will with trust, and symbolizes dignity in simple, daily duties,” she said, adding that his example inspires sisters to grow in virtue, patience, and commitment.
The Berhampur province currently has 27 junior sisters. In the congregation’s tradition, St. Joseph is invoked as a protector of vocations and a provider in times of need, making his feast day a significant spiritual occasion.
The Daughters of Charity first arrived in Odisha on February 12, 1940, establishing their initial community in Gopalpur-on-Sea under the Diocese of Berhampur. Today, the congregation has more than 16,700 members serving in 95 countries worldwide.
The Feast of St. Joseph continues to inspire the faithful across the globe to live lives rooted in humility, faith, and selfless service.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
