India: Jailed Catholic Priest Released on Bail; Bishop Thanks Supporters

Bishop Niranjan Sualsingh thanks supporters for their prayers and solidarity during Fr. Paul Adapoor’s imprisonment on Nov. 22, 2025.

The Bishop of Sambalpur, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, has expressed deep gratitude to all who offered prayers, support, and solidarity during the imprisonment of Fr. Paul Adapoor, Parish Priest of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church in Meghpal, who has now been released on bail.

“With hearts filled with gratitude and deep relief, I write to share the consoling and joyful news that Rev. Fr. Paul Adapoor has been granted bail and released yesterday (Nov 22),” said Bishop Niranjan Sualsingh in an official statement. “After several days of anxiety, prayer, and fraternal solidarity, the Lord has graciously heard our supplications and guided this situation toward justice and peace.”

Fr. Adapoor was initially denied bail due to the wrongful addition of certain legal sections. “We remained steadfast in faith, confident that truth would prevail. Today we thank God for His protecting hand and for bringing Fr. Paul back to freedom and safety,” the bishop noted.

The prelate extended heartfelt thanks to all those who stood by the priest during this difficult period. He acknowledged the legal team for their tireless work and dedication in presenting the truth and ensuring that justice was upheld.

He also expressed appreciation for the priests of the diocese, especially those who closely monitored the case, accompanied the legal team, provided documents, and offered their presence, guidance, and encouragement. Gratitude was likewise offered to religious congregations and the faithful who remained united in constant prayer for strength, justice, and peace.

“Your solidarity reflects the true spirit of our Christian fraternity and the strength of communion in moments of crisis,” Bishop Sualsingh said. “It is a blessing to witness how the entire diocesan family stood together with unwavering support and deep compassion.”

The bishop urged the faithful to continue praying for:

  • The emotional and spiritual healing of Fr. Adapoor after his distressing experience;

  • the soul of the deceased bike rider and comfort for his bereaved family;

  • a just and complete resolution of the remaining legal procedures;

  • peace, understanding, and reconciliation among all involved.

“May the Lord, who is our refuge and stronghold, continue to guide our priests, religious, and faithful with His wisdom and protect us from every harm,” the bishop concluded.
