India: Kurnool Diocese opens Diocesan Synod to shape pastoral program

Bishop Gorantla Johannes leads the opening Mass of the Kurnool Diocesan Synod at Jeevasudha with 121 clergy and religious on May 26, 2025.

The Catholic Diocese of Kurnool in South India inaugurated its Diocesan Synod on May 26, 2025, at Jeevasudha Pastoral Bhavana, marking a significant step toward renewed pastoral planning and ecclesial discernment.

The opening Holy Mass was presided over by Bishop Gorantla Johannes, OCD, with the participation of fellow clergy.

A total of 121 priests and nuns are taking part in this four-day synodal gathering.

In his inaugural message, Johannes invited participants to engage in threefold listening:

“Let us listen to the voice of the Spirit whispering to us, to the cries of our people, and to each other. This listening allows us to welcome the freshness that the Spirit brings into our hearts.

He emphasized that the synod’s goal is to develop a comprehensive pastoral plan that revitalizes parish ministry and sets consistent administrative policies for the diocese’s growth.

The second session focused on “Liturgical Life in the Diocese,” where a preparatory committee presented a brief report, followed by group discussions aimed at collecting insights and feedback from participants.

The Diocesan Synod will conclude on May 30, 2025, after deliberations, prayers, and collaborative planning sessions designed to strengthen the diocese's spiritual and pastoral mission. -with inputs from Pujitha Nagalli
