Indian bishop leads candlelight vigil in New Delhi for Air India flight crash

A solemn candlelight prayer service was held in front of the Marian Grotto at Sacred Heart Cathedral, New Delhi, to remember and pray for the victims of the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash on June 14.

Led by Anil J. T. Couto, Archbishop of Delhi, the hour-long service brought together around 200 people.

The gathering was organized by various commissions of the cathedral parish in collaboration with the Catholic Association of the Archdiocese of Delhi (CAAD).

The service opened with the hymn “The Lord Is My Shepherd, followed by an address from Ms. Leelamma John of the Women’s Commission.

Couto offered the opening prayer, and a scripture reading in Hindi was presented by Dr. Daisy Panna. Dr. Julie Rose led the Prayers of the Faithful.

Participants then recited the Glorious Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, led by different parish commissions, with prayers offered in both English and Hindi.

The service also included the Litany and concluded with the hymn “No Man Can Live as an Island, a final prayer by Divine Word Father Norbert Herman and a vote of thanks by A.C. Michael, CAAD president.

Among those present was Glady Vaiphei Hunjan, an internally displaced person from Manipur, who held a photo of a 26-year-old Manipur-born air hostess who perished in the crash.

The prayer service stood as a powerful gesture of unity, remembrance, and spiritual support for the victims and their grieving families.
