National Ecumenism Commission Charts New Path for Christian Unity in India
The annual meeting of the CCBI Commission for Ecumenism was held on 26–27 November 2025 at Subodhana – Karnataka Regional Pastoral Centre, Bengaluru.
This gathering brought together Office Bearers, National Council Members, and Regional Secretaries to reflect on the significance of ecumenism in India and to finalize the annual programme for implementing the CCBI’s pastoral plan for the Commission.
The meeting opened with an Ecumenical Prayer Service for Christian Unity, adapted from the Resources for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025, based on the theme “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26).
The prayer was offered in the context of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325 AD). The service was led by Fr. Denis Dsa, a member of the National Council of the CCBI Commission for Ecumenism.
Fr. Anthaiah Kondaveeti, Executive Secretary of the Commission, welcomed the participants and set the tone for the deliberations.
In his keynote address, the Chairman of the Commission, Bishop Francis Serrao, S.J., underlined the crucial role of the Ecumenism Commission in the present Indian context. He emphasized the growing need for unity and cooperation among Christian denominations across the country.
Over the two days, the participants engaged in meaningful discussions and collective reflection on three important themes:
-
The Significance and Relevance of the Council of Nicaea (325–2025) for Christian Unity in India Today
-
The Importance of Promoting United Christian Prayer for India
-
The Need to Form United Christian Forums in Every Diocese
After the presentation of national and regional reports on the Commission’s activities, the members deliberated on and finalized the action plan for the coming year.
In his concluding remarks, the Chairman encouraged all present to renew their commitment to the cause of Christian unity, to conscientize various groups in the Church about its importance, and to collaborate with other commissions—such as those for youth, women, and laity—to advance this vital mission.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Fr. Anthaiah Kondaveeti expressed gratitude to all participants for their presence and active involvement.
