Pakistan Archbishop Proposes Cricket Academy After Diocesan Youth Tournament

The Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi held its seventh diocesan cricket tournament from Aug. 18 to Oct. 29, bringing together teams representing parishes across the diocese in a celebration of sportsmanship and fellowship.

Archbishop Joseph Arshad of Islamabad-Rawalpindi has proposed establishing a cricket academy for Catholic youth, following the conclusion of the diocese’s seventh cricket tournament on October 29.

The tournament, held from August 18 to October 29, brought together teams representing parishes across the diocese, which serves Catholics in Pakistan’s capital region and surrounding areas. It aimed to promote fellowship among young people while encouraging teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship through competition.

The final match was contested by Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Islamabad, and St. John Paul II Parish, Islamabad. In the nine-over match, St. John Paul II emerged as champions after successfully chasing the target of 54 runs, while Our Lady of Fatima finished as runners-up.

Archbishop Arshad attended the closing ceremony as chief guest and addressed the two finalist teams. He shared his vision of establishing a cricket academy where Catholic players could receive training and develop their sporting abilities.

The proposal reflects the archbishop’s interest in creating opportunities for young people to identify and develop their talents through organized sports.

Recalling his experience in Bangladesh, Archbishop Arshad said he had organized cricket tournaments for Catholic youth there. He noted that the initiatives continued to be remembered, with one of his shields still being presented in recognition of his contribution.

His reflection highlighted how sustained efforts to support young people can leave a lasting legacy.

The tournament was organized to bring Catholic youth from different parishes together and strengthen relationships beyond their local communities. Organizers presented cricket not only as a competitive sport but also as an opportunity to practice respect, patience, discipline, and acceptance of both victory and defeat.

At the closing ceremony, participants were encouraged to carry these values into their daily lives and relationships within the Church.

Both finalist teams received medals and certificates. St. John Paul II Parish was presented with the winners’ cup, while Our Lady of Fatima Parish received the runner-up trophy.

The seventh edition of the diocesan tournament concluded with renewed emphasis on using sports to foster unity among Catholic youth and provide opportunities for their personal and social development
