Archbishop Joseph Arshad, Bishop of the Diocese of Rawalpindi-Islamabad in northern Pakistan, has called for the protection of constitutional rights, religious freedom, and equal opportunities for all citizens, stressing that discrimination based on religion or belief must be rejected.
In a message marking Pakistan's National Minorities Day, observed on August 11, Archbishop Arshad said all citizens share the country as their common homeland and that religious minorities have made important contributions to Pakistan's development, stability, and prosperity.
Archbishop Arshad said the observance provides an opportunity to renew efforts to promote religious tolerance, social harmony, mutual respect, and interfaith understanding.
He highlighted the contributions of Pakistan's Christian community since the country's establishment, particularly in education, health care, defense, social welfare, and other areas of public life.
Referring to the vision of Pakistan's founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Archbishop Arshad said the principles of equal citizenship and religious freedom must be implemented fully.
“Protection of the constitutional rights of minorities, religious freedom and equality must be ensured,” Archbishop Arshad said, emphasizing that providing equal rights and opportunities to every citizen, without discrimination based on religion or belief, is a national responsibility.
Archbishop Arshad said religious harmony and tolerance are essential foundations for a peaceful and stable society. He called for collective efforts to overcome hatred, prejudice, and intolerance and urged members of all religious communities to contribute to the country's development and common good.
He stressed that protecting minority rights is not only a constitutional requirement but also a moral and national responsibility shared by society as a whole.
Archbishop Arshad concluded by offering prayers for Pakistan's security, stability, peace, and prosperity, asking God to help citizens live together in mutual respect, love, and unity.
