Pakistan: Franciscan Tertiary Sisters of Lahore Elect New Leadership Council

The Franciscan Tertiary Sisters of Lahore elected Sr. Teresa Yaqoob, FTL, as their new Superior General during the congregation’s 23rd General Election Chapter held in Lahore, Pakistan, from July 5 to 8, 2026.

The Franciscan Tertiary Sisters of Lahore (FTL) elected their new general leadership during the congregation's 23rd General Election Chapter, held from July 5 to 8, 2026, at the Arooj-e-Mariam Renewal Centre in Youhanabad, Lahore, eastern Pakistan.

The delegates elected Sr. Teresa Yaqoob, FTL, as the new Superior General. She will lead the newly elected General Council, which consists of Sr. Judith Ranga, FTL (First Councillor), Sr. Edith Feroz, FTL (Second Councillor), Sr. Mercy Lal, FTL (Third Councillor), and Sr. Saima George, FTL (Fourth Councillor).

The FTL congregation focuses its mission on human development, social uplift, and pastoral care across Pakistan. Guided by their Franciscan charism, the sisters primarily serve marginalized communities through local educational networks, youth formation programs, hostel management, and grassroots missionary outreach.

The four-day assembly evaluated the congregation's life, ministries, and financial stewardship. Sr. Shumaila Mehnga, the outgoing Superior General, presented the administrative report, alongside updates from the formation, education, and hostel administration teams.

Reflecting on her tenure, Sr. Mehnga expressed gratitude to the sisters for their support and dedication to the congregation's missions across the country.

During the business sessions, the delegates reviewed and approved the revised Local Statutes, while maintaining the existing Constitutions without amendment. The assembly adopted several new recommendations concerning internal governance, financial administration, and specific benchmarks for their local apostolic ministries.

Archbishop Khalid Rehmat of Lahore inaugurated and oversaw the election process in accordance with canonical norms and congregation's constitution.

In his address to the Chapter, recognized the service of the outgoing administration, encouraging the incoming team to lead with fidelity to their Franciscan charism and commitment to the mission of the Church.

Upon taking office, the newly elected Superior General, Sr. Teresa Yaqoob, thanked the delegates for their trust and emphasized the leadership team's commitment to strengthening community life and continuing the congregation's service to the Church and society.

She noted that the council will prioritize spiritual formation, community development, and expanding their existing educational networks for marginalized youth.

The congregation acknowledged Archbishop Khalid Rehmat, Fr. Mughal Peter, OFM, Fr. Clarence Hayat, OFM Cap., and Commission Team Head Sister Ruth Aziz for their guidance during the Chapter, and thanked Fr. Amjad Yousaf for logistical support.

The event concluded with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist to dedicate the new leadership and the future work of the congregation.
