Philippine church leaders, Christians rally for ecology

Ecumenical Walk for Creation in Manila gathers hundreds of faithful on September 6, 2025.

Hundreds of people, including bishops, priests, nuns, and Christians from different faiths and denominations, gathered on September 6 for the Ecumenical Walk for Creation of the Laudato Si’ Movement Philippines, starting from the Central United Methodist Church in Ermita, Manila, and ending at Our Lady of Remedies Parish in Malate, Manila.

Lucena Bishop Mel Rey Uy, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) - Episcopal Commission on Ecumenical Affairs, and San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, vice president of Caritas Philippines, also attended.

The event began with an assembly at 5:00 AM at the Central United Methodist Church in Kalaw, Manila, followed by the walk from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM.

The Ecumenical Walk for Creation had the theme "Peace with Creation" to reflect on the mystery of creation and the relationship with the Earth during the Season of Creation, which is celebrated from September 1 to October 4.

The event was organized in collaboration with the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the Laudato Si' Movement Pilipinas, and other faith-based organizations.

In his brief speech, Caritas Philippines vice president Bishop Alminaza said that all have a responsibility to care for the creation, for the present generation, and for the generation that will follow.

According to CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Ecumenical Affairs chairman Bishop Uy, the ecology is at a dangerous point, and the government’s sound policy on the environment is needed at this hour, without abusing nature’s resources.

Since 2017, Laudato Si’ Movement Pilipinas, formerly known as Global Catholic Climate Movement Pilipinas, together with partner organizations, has spearheaded the annual Walk for Creation to open the Season of Creation.
