Young Catholics Renew Faith and Mission at Archdiocesan Youth Day in Bangladesh
Young Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Chattogram gathered in the hill district of Bandarban in southeastern Bangladesh for the Archdiocesan Youth Day, held from May 26 to 30.
Organized by the Youth Commission of the Chattogram Catholic Archdiocese, the five-day event brought together approximately 118 young men and women from 11 parishes and two quasi-parishes. The gathering was centered on the theme, “You Also Are to Testify Because You Have Been with Me” (John 15:27).
The primary objective of the event was to foster faith, witness, and unity among the youth of the archdiocese. Through prayer, spiritual formation, educational sessions, cultural performances, and the sharing of personal experiences, participants were given an opportunity to renew and deepen their faith.
The official inauguration began with the installation of the Youth Cross, followed by the opening Mass celebrated by Archbishop Lawrence Subrato Howlader, CSC of Chattogram.
Among those present were Fr. Bikash Rebeiro, CSC, National Youth Coordinator of Bangladesh; Fr. Joy Joseph Quia, Youth Coordinator of the Archdiocese of Chattogram; and Flavian D’Costa, Assistant Youth Coordinator of the archdiocese.
Also attending was Miki Paul Gonsalves, Head of Programs and Development of the Chattogram Catholic Archdiocese. He formally inaugurated the Youth Day by lighting the ceremonial lamp. During the ceremony, the first issue of Nabadhara (Bangla) was unveiled, along with the official Youth Day T-shirt.
Fr. Rebeiro led a reflection and sharing session on the Youth Day theme. Later, Gonsalves presented an overview of the centenary journey of the Chattogram Catholic Archdiocese and its vision for the future. His presentation was followed by a discussion session during which participants shared their perspectives on the current realities, opportunities, and challenges facing the local Church, as well as the role of young people in shaping its future.
Several sessions focused on nurturing a strong spiritual life and responding generously to God's call. One of the highlights was a presentation on “Mother Mary, the Power of the Rosary in the Catholic Faith, and the Responsibilities of Youth within the Family,” which deeply inspired the participants.
The youth also visited villages and Indigenous communities in Bandarban, a district known for its rich ethnic diversity and picturesque hills near the border with Myanmar. The visits allowed participants to gain firsthand experience of local cultures, lifestyles, and social realities. In the evening, an Adoration of the Holy Cross brought everyone together in an atmosphere of prayer and contemplation.
The closing Mass was celebrated by Fr. Terence Rodrigues, Vicar General of the Chattogram Catholic Archdiocese. Later, a vibrant cultural program showcased the talents, creativity, and enthusiasm of the young participants.
The gathering of prayer, learning, and fraternity inspired renewed hope and enthusiasm among the youth, encouraging them to become living witnesses of Christ in their families, parishes, and society.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
