Indian literary association felicitates Bangladeshi Cardinal D’Rosario

A newly formed Indian literary association honoured a Bangladeshi Catholic leader in Kolkota, West Bengal on February 7.

A newly formed Indian literary association honoured a Bangladeshi Catholic leader in Kolkota, West Bengal on February 7.

Cardinal Patrick D’Rozario, CSC, celebrated his golden jubilee of priesthood on January 6, 2022. Cardinal D’Rosario was in India to meet  Iris Gomes, his elder sister Iris Gomes and family members.

The cardinal will be in Kolkota from February 3-10, celebrating fifty years of his priesthood with family members in the area.

Cardinal’s family became a victim of the partition in 1947, which separated Bengal into two: West Bengal and Bangladesh. West Bengal remained with India and Bangladesh became a new country in the course of time.

Due to the pandemic restriction, the celebrations were held in small gatherings.

Bangla Khristiyo Sahityya Academy held a felication program for Cardinal D’Rosario at the residence of Ms. Gomes.

Bangla Khristiyo Sahityya Academy (KSA) aims to promote a dialogue.

Dr. Mally Ghosh Bhowmik, the Secretary of KSA, read out a message (Manpotro) on behalf of the Academy wishing the Cardinal a long life in his priestly journey and gratitude to the prelate for contributing significantly to the Church in Bangladesh.

The prelate has held important positions as Bishop of Rajshahi, Bishop of Chittagong and Archbishop of Dhaka for nearly three decades served as a bishop, archbishop and cardinal in Bangladesh.

“Cardinal has served the Church as a ‘Good Shepherd’ who can smell his sheep at the grassroots level. He is a man for the other and the marginalized. His interest in literature, theology, music is beyond our imagination,” said Dr. Mally.

Cardinal D’Rosario appreciates the efforts of Christian Bengali authors who were able to form the Bengali Khristiyo Sahitya Academy.

The Cardinal shared that he dreamt of having such a  core group who could take up the cause of Bengali Literature to greater heights. The prelate assured to promote the Bengali literature and take the message of Christ to the larger community.

Among others who were also present at this felicitation were Asim Joachim Campoo, Sanjay Rozario, and a few others interested in literature, art, and music.

The inauguration KSA was held at the Archbishop’s House, 32, Mother Teresa Sarani in the presence of Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, Bishop Shyamol Bose, Father Dominic Gomes, vicar general, and a few other poets from Bengal on December 31, 2021.

The founder members of the KSA are Father Sunil Rosario (President), Madhavi Gilbert (Vice-President), Dr. Mally Ghosh Bhowmik (Secretary), Dr. Sadhana Karali (Joint Secretary), Molina Vincent (Editor), Suvankar Mondal ( assistant editor), and I. H. Gomes (Treasurer).
