Dole Out System

Reflection Date: April 20, 2026 | Monday of the Third Week of Easter
Daily Readings: Acts 6:8-15; John 6:22-29

Children of God:
In development work, there is a concept known as the dole-out system.

This happens when aid or resources are continuously given without requiring participation or responsibility from the recipients.

At first, it seems helpful and generous.

But over time, it can create dependency, where people rely too much on external help and lose initiative.

This is closely related to what is called dependency theory, which explains how systems can unintentionally keep people reliant rather than empowered.

For example, there are missionaries who build chapels using only their own money without inviting the local community to contribute.

The structure is completed, but the sense of ownership among the people is weak.

Another example is a politician who distributes cash assistance, not purely out of service, but to gain loyalty or patronage.

People receive help, but sometimes at the cost of freedom and dignity.

These situations show that not all giving leads to growth.

Sometimes, excessive generosity can limit true development.

In the gospel of John, the crowd searched for Jesus after experiencing the multiplication of the loaves.

They crossed the sea to find him, but their motivation was questioned.

Jesus challenged them to look beyond the food they ate and to seek something deeper that truly satisfies.

What are our inspirations for today?

First, faith is not about what we receive but about whom we believe.

The people followed Jesus because they experienced something beneficial.

They saw the miracle and wanted more.

Their search was driven by what they could gain rather than by who Jesus truly was.

That’s why Jesus invited them to move beyond material satisfaction and to recognize the deeper meaning of his presence.

In our lives, it is easy to approach God only when we need something.

We pray when we lack, and we seek when we want blessings.

But true faith goes beyond receiving.

It is about entering into a relationship with God, trusting him not just for what he gives, but for who he is.

Second, true growth requires participation, not passive dependence.

Jesus did not encourage the crowd to remain dependent on miracles.

Instead, he directed them toward a deeper kind of work, one that involves faith and personal response.

This showed that faith is active, not passive.

It calls for engagement, trust, and commitment.

In our daily lives, growth happens when we take responsibility for our faith and actions.

Just as communities grow when people contribute and participate, our spiritual life deepens when we actively respond to God.

Faith becomes stronger when it is lived, not just received.

We can reflect on these questions in our hearts. Do I seek God only for what I can receive, or do I truly desire a relationship with him?

Am I willing to take an active role in my faith journey? And how can I move from dependency to a more mature and responsible way of living my faith?

Children of God:
The message of the gospel invites us to look deeper into our motivations.

God provides for our needs, but he also calls us to grow.

Faith is not meant to keep us dependent but to lead us toward maturity.

Like in development work, real progress happens when there is participation and responsibility.

God does not only give; he also invites us to respond.

Our journey of faith becomes meaningful when we engage with it fully.

We are called not just to receive blessings but to become instruments of grace.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
