Children of God: In Vietnam, families traditionally gather each Lunar New Year for Tết, their most important celebration. It is a time when generations come together to honor their ancestors, share food, and renew family ties. Homes are cleaned and decorated, and children show respect to their elders while receiving blessings for the year ahead. What makes Tết meaningful is not the grandness of the feast, but the love and gratitude that fill the home. It is in these simple gestures of togetherness that family becomes sacred—a living sign of unity, respect, and faithfulness.
In the feast of the Holy Family, we are reminded of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph living out their faith not in comfort, but in quiet obedience and trust. Warned by an angel, Joseph takes Mary and the child Jesus and flees to Egypt to protect them from King Herod. Later, after Herod’s death, they return and settle in Nazareth. Through these journeys, the Holy Family teaches us that holiness is not found in extraordinary miracles, but in ordinary acts of love, sacrifice, and obedience to God’s will.
The life of the Holy Family was simple, even difficult. They faced danger, uncertainty, and exile. Yet, through it all, they remained united in faith and love. Joseph listened to God in silence, Mary pondered everything in her heart, and Jesus grew “in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” Their home in Nazareth became a small sanctuary where God’s presence was deeply felt, not through luxury, but through love.
This too reminds us that our homes, can be holy places. Every act of patience, forgiveness, and care we show in our families is a reflection of divine love. Holiness is not about perfection but presence: being there for one another, listening, and supporting each other in both joys and trials. When God’s love rules in our homes, even the most ordinary days become sacred.
Children of God: Let us look to the Holy Family as our model. Like them, may we build our families on faith, love, and trust in God’s guidance. In every meal shared, every prayer whispered, and every act of kindness offered, may we discover the holiness of ordinary family life.
