Redefining Family

January 27, 2026 Tuesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 6:12b-15, 17-19; Mark 3:31-35

Children of God: How did the Catholic Church establish itself in Hong Kong? The Catholic Church in Hong Kong was established in 1841, as a respond to the religious needs of Catholic Irish troops stationed in the newly occupied territory. The early missionaries faced a challenging environment, from language barriers to cultural differences, yet they persevered in bringing the sacraments and faith to those who sought it. The foundation stone for the first Catholic church in Hong Kong was then dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

Over time, the Church grew to serve not only the military but also the local population, establishing schools, hospitals, and parishes. These humble beginnings remind us that the Church often starts small, rooted in care, presence, and commitment.

The story of the Church in Hong Kong also highlights the challenges of balancing family, culture, and faith. The missionaries had to navigate local expectations while introducing a new way of life centered on Christ.

This history shows that faith often redefines who our “family” is, inviting us into a community united by God rather than mere biology.

We know from the gospel that while Jesus is teaching, his mother and brothers arrive, seeking him, perhaps concerned or wanting to speak with him. Jesus responds not by dismissing them, but by expanding the definition of family: “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:35).

Here, faith and obedience to God create bonds that transcend traditional family ties. What, then, are our inspirations for today as we reflect on family, faith, and belonging?

First, true family is defined by obedience to God rather than only by blood.

When his biological family comes to see him, Jesus used the occasion to teach a radical truth. Family is more than biology; it is shared commitment to God’s will.

This is a profound challenge for us today. Sometimes, following God can create tension with those closest to us. Just as the missionaries in Hong Kong had to navigate local expectations, we too must find ways to honor both earthly family and divine calling.

Second, belonging to God’s family calls for action, not just affiliation.

Jesus points to those seated around him and declares that his true family consists of those who do God’s will. This principle reminds us that identity in Christ is lived daily.

Children of God: Following God may sometimes conflict with family desires or societal norms. Yet true family rooted in faith sustains, encourages, and transforms. It reaches beyond divisions and creates unity in diversity. May we embrace God’s family with courage, obedience, and love.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
