Pope Appoints Vietnamese Bishop as Member of Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue

Bishop Joseph Chau Ngoc Tri of the Diocese of Lang Son-Cao Bang, Vietnam.

On July 3, 2025, Pope Leo XIV appointed Bishop Joseph Chau Ngoc Tri of the Diocese of Lang Son-Cao Bang, Vietnam, as a member of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.

Alongside Bishop Tri, the Holy Father also appointed four cardinals and seventeen bishops from around the world. Notable among them are the Archbishop of Bangkok (Thailand) and Cardinal Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi, Archbishop of Tokyo (Japan).

The Prefect of the Dicastery is Cardinal George Jacob Koovadad of India, a member of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.

Cardinal Koovadad previously served as the coordinator for Pope Francis’ apostolic journeys and was created a cardinal by the late Pope Francis on December 7, 2024.

Among Vietnamese bishops, another currently serving as a member of a Vatican dicastery is Bishop Peter Nguyen Van Kham of the Diocese of My Tho. He is a member of the Dicastery for Communication.
