On the final full day of his Apostolic Journey in Africa, Pope Leo celebrated Mass, visited prisoners, and met with young people in Bata, ending the day with a vibrant encounter marked by song, dance, and heavy tropical rain, Vatican News reported.

Tens of thousands gathered at a football stadium in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, for the Pope’s meeting with youth and families. Despite a sudden downpour, many young people remained in the open, singing and dancing as they awaited his arrival. When the Pope appeared, the crowd erupted in cheers, creating a joyful and energetic atmosphere.

Addressing the gathering, the Pope praised the vitality of the young people. “The brightest light here is the one that shines in your eyes, on your faces, in your smiles and through your songs,” he said, encouraging them to foster harmony and generosity in their communities, Vatican News reported.

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo visited a prison in Bata, where he delivered a message of compassion and hope. Acknowledging the difficult conditions faced by inmates, he reminded them that they remain valued in God’s eyes. “No one is excluded from God’s love,” the Pope said. “Each of us, with our unique stories, mistakes, and sufferings, remains precious in the Lord’s eyes,” according to Vatican News.

Rain began to fall during the prison visit, which the Pope described as a possible sign of God’s blessing. He invited those present to pray that the rain would indeed be a blessing for all.

The Pope also traveled to Mongomo, where he celebrated Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the second-largest church in Africa. Large crowds welcomed him with enthusiasm, reflecting the deep faith of the local community.

In his homily, Pope Leo reflected on the country’s natural resources and the need for equitable development. He noted that Equatorial Guinea has been blessed with significant natural wealth, but emphasized that such resources should benefit all people. He urged the faithful to work together to ensure that these blessings are shared justly, Vatican News reported.

The Pope also spoke of the people’s longing for a better future. “There is a hunger for a future imbued with hope,” he said, stressing that such a future must be actively built through cooperation and God’s grace rather than passively awaited, as reported by Vatican News.
