Pope Leo XIV sets canonization date for Acutis and Frassati

Pope Leo XIV announces joint canonization of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati on September 7, 2025.

Pope Leo XIV has officially announced that Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati will be canonized together on Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The declaration was made during the ordinary public consistory held this morning at the Apostolic Palace.

Originally scheduled separately under Pope Francis—Acutis on April 27 and Frassati during the Youth Jubilee—the ceremonies were postponed following Pope Francis’ death in April.

Pope Leo XIV has now chosen to unite the two young laymen, known for their inspiring faith and global following, in a joint canonization as part of the Jubilee celebrations.

Both figures, though from different times and backgrounds, are seen as models of holiness for today’s youth, admired for their passion for Christ and service to others.

In the same consistory, the Pope also set October 19, 2025, as the date for the canonization of seven additional Blesseds:

  • Ignatius Shoukrallah Maloyan, Armenian Catholic archbishop and martyr of the 1915 genocide.

  • Peter To Rot, a Papuan lay catechist martyred in 1945, is soon to be Papua New Guinea’s first saint.

  • Vincenza Maria Poloni, founder of the Sisters of Mercy of Verona.

  • Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martínez, founder of the Servants of Jesus.

  • Maria Troncatti, of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

  • José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, Venezuelan doctor known as “the doctor of the poor.”

  • Bartolo Longo, the founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, is a beloved figure in Italy and beyond.

Also among those to be canonized on October 19 are two laypeople: José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, a Venezuelan doctor and Secular Franciscan known as “the doctor of the poor” for his tireless care for the sick and his generosity in covering their medical expenses; and Bartolo Longo, the beloved founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, venerated widely in Italy and across the world.
