PNG’s Yarapos Mercy: Building Women of Purpose Through Faith and Leadership

In the beautiful Sepik Region of Papua New Guinea, within the Catholic Diocese of Wewak, stands a shining example of courage and transformation: Yarapos Mercy All Girls Secondary School. Guided by the Catholic Church and the charism of the Sisters of Mercy, this school is more than just an academic institution—it’s a sanctuary for the holistic development of young women.

This year, the school marked a deeply spiritual and symbolic moment with the celebration of its annual Leaders’ Mass. Bishop Jozef Roszynski presided over the Mass, which was led by long-serving Principal Mr. Alex Markus, celebrating not only student leadership but also the school’s enduring mission.

A School With a Purpose

Founded to provide girls with a safe, faith-centered education, Yarapos Mercy is rooted in the belief that education must nurture the whole person—intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and morally.

Principal Markus, whose leadership spans decades, has remained steadfast in his mission: that every girl who graduates does so not only with academic qualifications but with confidence, character, and a strong sense of purpose. His vision is shared by Mrs. Kialli, the school’s devoted Religious Education Coordinator, and a committed team of staff who view their work as a sacred vocation.

The school’s motto, “Educate the Woman, Empower the Nation, is lived out daily in classrooms, dormitories, and through every school activity.

Leaders’ Mass: A Sacred Celebration

The 2025 Leaders’ Mass was a highlight of the school year. Held at the school’s chapel, the event recognized and commissioned new student leaders. It was a day of immense joy and pride, as Pope Francis awarded a papal medal to Principal Markus, honoring his tireless dedication to Catholic education and girls’ formation.

Bishop Jozef praised the school’s leadership model and said, "By allowing these young women to lead, to serve, and to make decisions, Yarapos is forming future mothers, teachers, doctors, and leaders who will govern with wisdom and compassion."

Mrs. Kialli was also honored with a blessed rosary from the Pope for her continued dedication to integrating faith and character into the curriculum.

Forming Future Leaders

Leadership at Yarapos is more than a title—it’s a journey. Student leaders are entrusted with real responsibilities: resolving conflicts, organizing events, and representing the school in the wider community. From dormitory captains to liturgical leaders, girls are empowered to serve with humility and emotional intelligence.

Many alumnae have gone on to serve in influential roles in government, education, health, and the Church—some even returning to teach at Yarapos.

A Community of Formation

Formation at Yarapos isn’t confined to the classroom. Yarapos guides students to discover their identity and purpose through prayer, mentoring, retreats, and spiritual direction. Older students mentor younger ones, building a strong sisterhood of support and trust.

Faith is deeply embedded in everyday life—from morning devotions and weekly Masses to Scripture classes and liturgical arts. Under Mrs. Kialli’s guidance, religious education nurtures both the mind and the soul.

Principal Markus: A Man of Mercy

Mr. Alex Markus is a respected figure in Catholic education. Under his humble leadership, the school has grown in strength and spirit. Although he was surprised by receiving the Papal Medal, his response was simple: "This is not my medal. It belongs to the girls, the teachers, the sisters, and all who believe that education can change the world."

A Model of Girls' Education in Papua New Guinea

In a country where many girls still struggle to access education, Yarapos Mercy All Girls Secondary School shines as a model of what is possible when love, faith, and vision come together.

In the words of Bishop Jozef, "Yarapos is not just making good students. It is forming saints, servants, and shepherds for a new Papua New Guinea."

The school’s leadership remains committed to its mission, with plans to expand digital learning, build a new library, and support girls from disadvantaged backgrounds through scholarships.

Above all, Yarapo's Mercy continues to guide young women to live with knowledge, compassion, and a profound relationship with God.
