Indonesia: Jakarta Cathedral Marks 125 Years with Faith, Heritage, and Call to Care for Creation

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jakarta marked the 125th anniversary of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral with a solemn Mass on April 21, 2026.

On April 21, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jakarta marked the 125th anniversary of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral with a solemn Mass and commemorative events.

One of the most iconic churches in Indonesia, the neo-Gothic cathedral stands across from the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. It serves not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the country’s religious harmony and cultural heritage.

Designed by Jesuit priest-architect Antonius Dijkmans and constructed by Marius Hulswit, the cathedral dates back to the turn of the 20th century. Its foundation stone was laid in 1899, and it was solemnly blessed in 1901. More than a century later, it continues to serve as the spiritual heart of Catholic life in the capital.

The thanksgiving Mass was presided over by Ignatius Suharyo, together with clergy of the cathedral parish. The liturgy brought together the faithful in prayerful remembrance of generations who have worshiped within its walls.

Following the Mass, a tumpeng, a traditional cone-shaped rice dish symbolizing gratitude and blessing, was ceremonially cut as part of the celebration.

An exhibition titled “Sustainable Preservation Efforts” was also inaugurated, offering visitors insight into the cathedral’s current condition and conservation initiatives. Since being declared a heritage site by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia in 2018, the cathedral has stood at the intersection of faith and preservation, challenging both Church and society to safeguard its legacy.

This commitment will continue with an upcoming architectural seminar, “Heritage Walk and Talk: Jakarta Cathedral,” scheduled for May 1. Organized in collaboration with the Indonesian Institute of Architects, the event will feature experts including architect Gregorius Yori Antar and scholar Johannes Wibowo.

Beyond the celebrations, the anniversary carries a deeper spiritual message. The official logo draws inspiration from the words of Christ in Gospel of John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches.”

The imagery reflects a theological vision in which humanity finds life and fruitfulness only when rooted in God. This message is further expressed through symbols of unity, creation, and divine relationship, including the motif of two reaching hands inspired by The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo.

Flowing tones of blue and green evoke both the Virgin Mary, patroness of the cathedral, and the natural world, reinforcing a call to ecological responsibility.

Under the theme “Caring for Creation, Nurturing Faith,” the anniversary aligns with the archdiocese’s pastoral direction for 2026, emphasizing environmental stewardship as an integral expression of Christian discipleship.

As Jakarta Cathedral marks 125 years, the celebration becomes more than a remembrance of the past. It is a renewed invitation to protect what has been entrusted, deepen faith in a changing world, and continue building a Church that is both rooted in tradition and responsive to the signs of the times.
