Northeast India’s Christian Leaders Recommend The Chosen

An ecumenical forum of Northeast India has recommended that Christians of the region watch The Chosen, a multi-season TV show (2017) about the life of Jesus. It was created, directed, and co-written by American filmmaker Dallas Jenkins in 2017.
The drama is about the life of Jesus Christ, introducing Jesus and the calling of his initial disciples, with a discussion after each episode. It has 42 episodes.
The series can be watched by downloading The Chosen app, available at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-chosen/id6443956656 for Apple devices and at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details for Android devices.
The recommendation comes following the United Christian Forum North East India (UCFNEI), which held a meeting on July 16 in Guwahati, in the state of Assam. “We recommend The Chosen to be shown in Northeast India,” a press note from UCFNEI said.
The TV series has a profound cultural and religious impact, humanizing biblical narratives by portraying Jesus and his disciples through relatable, character-driven storytelling.
“The Chosen has made biblical stories accessible to modern audiences. This approach fosters emotional engagement, particularly among Christians seeking a fresh perspective on familiar narratives,” the press release said.
The series mirrors biblical catechesis and educational tools. “We see that many churches are using the series to spark discussions about scripture,” said Father Tom Mangattuthazhe, North East India Regional Bishops' Council Secretary for Ecumenism.
“We have seen many viewers report deepened faith, emotional healing, or renewed interest in spirituality, underscoring its role as a source of comfort and inspiration as part of personal testimonials,” he explained.
“We are certain that The Chosen focuses on Jesus’s humanity and divinity, His relationships, and thus appeals to millions in the world,” said Dr. Namseng R. Marak, the Secretary General of the United Christian Forum, North East India. According to him, The Chosen has redefined ecumenical works through innovative storytelling, distribution, and community engagement.
“We encourage you to lead the way in sharing The Chosen app with your congregation and those under your influence,” said Marak.
“We are hoping to see a significant increase in downloads of The Chosen app across Northeast India in the coming days,” said Marak.
Northeast India is the easternmost region of India. It includes eight states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim. Key denominations in Northeast India include Baptist, Catholic, and Presbyterian, with Baptist and Catholic communities being particularly large.
With Christian majorities in the states of Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya, Christianity is a major religion in Northeast India. Christian missions have historically had a significant impact on the social and political situation of the region, especially among tribal communities. The social fabric of the area saw substantial changes because of missions and British colonization, including the emergence of national identity movements and, occasionally, political unrest. The cultural and religious landscape of the region is still shaped by Christianity, as evidenced by the constant communication and interaction between Christian and non-Christian communities.
The United Christian Forum North East India comprises the North East India Christian Council, the Presbyterian Church of India, the Council of Baptist Churches North East India, and the North East India Regional Bishops' Council.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
