Philippines: Second edition of book on shrines, evangelization to be launched

The Role of Shrines in View of the new evangelization

The long-awaited second edition of the award-winning book, "The Role of Shrines in View of the New Evangelization: Pope Francis’ Theology on Shrines and Pilgrimages Applied in the Philippine Context," will be launched on June 17.

Bro. Ivan Panganiban (Kendrick Ivan Panganiban) is the author of a book published by Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc.

Catholic theology and heritage advocacy are areas of specialization for Panganiban. He graduated from Bulacan's Immaculate Conception Major Seminary with two master's degrees, one in pastoral ministry and the other in systematic theology.

At the University of Santo Tomas, he is currently pursuing a Licentiate and Master of Arts degree in Sacred Theology and Church History.

In collaboration with the Association of Catholic Shrines and Pilgrimages in the Philippines, the Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc., launched the book's first edition in 2021.

The book launch event will occur from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Crypt and Chapel of the Resurrection at the International Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Antipolo Cathedral), Philippines.

Copies of the book will be sold at a special rate of PHP 650.00 (US$ 11.64) (the regular price is PHP 700.00, or US$ 12.54) during the book launch.

This new edition has been updated, with 88 pages added to the first.

"The Role of Shrines in View of the New Evangelization" won Best Book in Liturgy at the 15th Cardinal Sin Catholic Book Awards and was a finalist in the 40th National Book Awards (2023).

The usefulness of shrines as a tool for evangelization and their significance in Catholics' daily lives are explained in the book.

In his work, "The Role of Shrines in View of the New Evangelization," the author emphasizes that shrines are holy locations that may be found worldwide, where pilgrims from various countries might experience God's love.

Even in the current era, these locations are still viewed as evangelization hubs where the church is felt—a church where devotion flourishes and where the mission is held in the pastoral activities of the shrine.

The author summarizes his study in the book, which serves as a pastoral handbook on the growth of shrine administration and a reference to theology on shrines and pilgrimages.

Pope Francis' advice on creating shrines for the New Evangelization of the Church inspired this. Additionally, it offers thorough documentation of all the Philippines' numerous proclaimed shrines for the first time. - Santosh Digal
