Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary Consecrated at Dominican Retreat Center in Western India
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary at the Satyagiri Dominican Retreat Centre in Igatpuri, Maharashtra State, western India, was solemnly consecrated and blessed on June 13, 2026, in a celebration attended by thousands of devotees.
The ceremony was led by Archbishop John Rodrigues of Bombay and attended by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, six bishops from dioceses across Maharashtra, numerous priests, religious sisters, and a large gathering of lay faithful.
In his homily, Archbishop Rodrigues described the dedication of the shrine as a significant moment in the life of the Church.
“Dedication signifies that this is a place of worship, a place of prayer, the house of God,” he said.
Referring to the spiritual significance of Satyagiri, he noted that people have experienced the presence and grace of God at the retreat center for many years and would now encounter the same grace in the newly dedicated Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The archbishop expressed gratitude for the completion of the project, acknowledging the perseverance of the Dominican Fathers, the generosity of benefactors, and the contributions of many people through their work, sacrifice, and prayers.
He reminded the faithful that while church buildings are sacred places of worship, believers themselves are called to become dwelling places of God by growing in holiness and proclaiming His goodness.
Archbishop Rodrigues also highlighted the mission entrusted to the Dominican Order by St. Dominic to promote devotion to the Rosary and lead people closer to Christ through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Perpetua Miranda, a devotee, described the event as “a very edifying and memorable experience.”
She said that witnessing thousands of devotees, including many elderly pilgrims, travel from different parts of the region to honor the Blessed Mother was deeply inspiring. Having previously attended retreats at Satyagiri, she expressed her joy at seeing the new shrine and said she looked forward to returning for prayer and reflection.
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary is part of the Satyagiri Dominican Retreat Centre, which is known for hosting retreats and spiritual programs throughout the year. Retreats are conducted weekly in various languages, and the shrine is expected to become an important center for Marian devotion, particularly during Marian feasts and Rosary novenas.
Construction of the shrine began in 2023 and faced several challenges during the building process.
“We faced various obstacles in completing this work, but today this dream has become a reality. We are indeed grateful to God,” said Fr. Benish Macias, Director of the Shrine.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
