Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith of Colombo, Sri Lanka, has expressed deep concern over the current global situation, warning that the world is being pushed to the brink of destruction by power-driven ambitions.

Presiding over the Easter Mass at St. Lucia’s Cathedral of the archdiocese of Colombo alongside auxiliary bishops, the cardinal emphasized that the true meaning of Easter lies in taking concrete steps toward peace.

Reflecting on ongoing geopolitical tensions, Cardinal Ranjith said the desire for domination has destabilized the world and caused widespread suffering.

“We must pray specifically for world peace during this time,” he said. “Peace has been broken because of selfish ambition. Because of one person’s desire to rule the world, great suffering has come upon the entire human race.”

He called on the faithful to pray for a change of heart among world leaders, urging them to turn away from aggression and choose paths that promote peace.

The cardinal also criticized what he described as superficial expressions of faith, stressing that Christianity goes beyond rituals.

He said that faith is not limited to reciting prayers or reading Scripture, but must be reflected in daily life and actions.

“Christianity is about love and living that love. It is about becoming a servant, being upright before God and one’s neighbor,” he said.

Presiding over the Easter Mass at St. Lucia’s Cathedral alongside auxiliary bishops, Cardinal Ranjith emphasized that the true meaning of Easter lies in taking concrete steps toward peace.

He also cautioned against leaders who associate with religious figures for public image but fail to embody the values of the Gospel.

Cardinal Ranjith highlighted the contrast between Christian teachings and contemporary leadership styles. He noted that, according to Christian principles, leadership is rooted in service.

“Those who rule the world today do not become servants,” he said. “They remain rulers driven by the pursuit of power.”

He further emphasized the need for the international community to act together to prevent the loss of innocent lives amid ongoing global conflicts and humanitarian crises.

The cardinal’s message underscored the link between faith and responsibility, reminding the faithful that Easter calls for a commitment to justice, humility, and the protection of human life.
