World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is celebrated in a remote parish in West Bengal
A parish in a remote area of the Diocese of Asansol, in the Indian state of West Bengal, celebrated the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on July 27.
The celebration at Infant Jesus Church, Bolpur, began with a solemn procession in which the grandparents and elderly were lovingly welcomed and honored with chandan tika (sandalwood paste) on their foreheads, a traditional Indian sign of respect and reverence.
The Holy Eucharist was presided over by Fr. Deepak Kumar Digal, who, in his homily, highlighted the immense value and dignity of grandparents.
He spoke of their unwavering love, faith, and sacrifices, reminding the congregation that it is through their dedication and hard work that families remain strong and united.
After the Mass, a short felicitation program was held. The youngest members of the parish expressed their love and gratitude by offering flowers to the grandparents, creating a moving moment of intergenerational unity and joy.
The celebration concluded with a shared meal, bringing the parish community together in fellowship and thanksgiving.
The day was a truly meaningful tribute to grandparents, whose lives continue to inspire, motivate, and guide younger generations.
