Church set on fire in Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh

Church Located in Sukhtawa village of Narmadapuram district in Madhya Pradesh was burned from inside and and the name 'Ram' was written on the wall

A church was set on fire in Narmadapuram in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, by unidentified people.

On Sunday February 12, some unknown people entered the church through the window and tried to burn the church.

According to the information provided by Itarsi Sub-divisional Police Officer Mahendra Singh Chauhan, the incident took place on Sunday at the church located in the Chowkipura area.

The police have registered a case against unknown people and are trying to trace the culprits.

The complainant has told that people who reached the church for prayer on Sunday evening found that the church was lit from the inside and the name 'Ram' was written on the wall, allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Preliminary investigation the miscreants entered inside by removing the window nets and trying to set fire from inside. Some religious books and other items including furniture were also burnt in the fire.

Located in Sukhtawa village of Kesla block of Narmadapuram district in Madhya Pradesh, this church is associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. This area is tribal-dominated.

After registering a case under section 295 of the Penal Code, several police teams have been formed to nab the accused. At the same time, the police officer has denied any tension in the Chowkipura area after the incident.  - Praveen Parmar
