Philippine: St Joseph proclaimed as ‘protector’ of Quezon City

A city government in the Philippines has formally recognized Saint Joseph as the "protector” of the Local Government Unit (LGU).

A city government in the Philippines has formally recognized Saint Joseph as the "protector” of the Local Government Unit (LGU).

Mayor Joy Belmonte, Councilors Jorge Banal Sr., Wency Lagumbay, and District 3 Action Officer Tommy de Castro attended a ceremony during which it was formally solemnized the recognition of the Patron of Saint Joseph as a "Protector of Quezon City.”

The recognition was awarded to San Jose (Saint Joseph) after the petition filed by Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao and was submitted to the City Council as City Resolution 8771-2021.

On February 19, Father Ronaldo M. Macale, rector and parish priest of St. Joseph Shrine offered the Holy Mass to mark the occasion, attended Mayor Belmonte, government officials, and Catholics.

On behalf of Bishop Ongtioco and the diocese of Cubao, Father Macale thanked Mayor Belmonte and the City Councilors for the formal recognition.

Founded on November 23, 1951, the Diocesan Shrine of St. Joseph is strategically located along with one of the stations (Anonas) of the Light Road Transport system.

The Shrine primarily caters to the Catholics of eight barangays (villages) under the Diocese of Cubao. 

Quezon City, also known as the City of Quezon is the most populous city in the Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 2,960,048 people.

It was founded on October 12, 1939, and was named for Manuel L. Quezon, the second president of the Philippines.
