Pope Leo XIV Receives First Copy of “Free Under Grace,” Collection of Augustinian Writings
Pope Leo XIV has received the first copy of the Italian edition of Free Under Grace, a volume containing his writings from his time as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, according to Vatican News.
The book, published by the Vatican Publishing House, compiles texts written between 2001 and 2013, when the pope, then known as Robert Francis Prevost, led the Augustinian order.
As reported by Vatican News, the first copy of the Italian edition, available in bookstores beginning May 4, was presented to the pope by Father Joseph Farrell, current Prior General of the Augustinians, who promoted the publication. He was accompanied by Father Rocco Ronzani, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Archive and one of the editors, as well as Lorenzo Fazzini, editorial director of the Vatican Publishing House.
The volume was edited by Ronzani together with Augustinian priests Father Miguel Ángel Martín Juárez and Father Michael Di Gregorio.
Vatican News reported that the book gathers speeches, homilies, letters, and messages, offering insight into the spiritual and pastoral outlook of Pope Leo XIV prior to his election. It is the first time these writings have been compiled into a single volume.
The publication is expected to reach a global audience. According to Vatican News, translations are currently underway in around 30 countries, with editions in multiple languages to be released in the coming months.
The book was first announced by the Vatican Publishing House during the Frankfurt International Book Fair in October 2025.
The release of the volume provides a documented account of the theological reflections and pastoral priorities that shaped the ministry of Pope Leo XIV before his papacy.
