PNG International Movement of Catholic Student - University of Goroka

Catholic student leaders at the University of Goroka mark a new chapter with the IMCS handover-takeover ceremony on May 3, 2025.

On May 3, 2025, the International Movement of Catholic Students Movement (IMCS) at the University of Goroka (UOG) chapter held its annual handover-takeover ceremony, marking a significant transition in student leadership and reaffirming the organization's commitment to spiritual growth, community service, and academic excellence.

A Legacy of Faith and Service

The Papua New Guinea International Movement The Catholic Students Movement at the University of Goroka is part of a global movement of Catholic students that has long been a pillar of spiritual life on campus, fostering a community grounded in Catholic teachings and values. The handover-takeover ceremony is a cherished tradition, symbolizing the peaceful transfer of responsibilities from outgoing leaders to their successors. This event ensures continuity in leadership and reinforces the organization's mission to nurture faith and promote service among students.

Ceremony Highlights

The ceremony commenced with a solemn Mass at the Holy Family Parish in North Goroka, led by the Vicar General of Goroka, Fr. Adam MSF. In his homily, the chaplain emphasized the importance of servant leadership, urging the new executives to lead with humility and dedication.

Following the Mass, the formal handover-takeover proceedings took place. Outgoing president Sr. Rose delivered a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the achievements of her tenure, including successful outreach programs and interfaith dialogues. She expressed gratitude to her team and encouraged the new leaders to build upon the foundation laid.

Incoming President Jerome John and Secretary Desmond Peter accepted the mantle of leadership with a pledge to uphold the values of the CSM. They outlined his vision for the organization, focusing on expanding community service initiatives and enhancing spiritual formation programs. Jerome John emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in achieving these goals.

University Support and Broader Context

The University of Goroka has consistently supported student organizations like the CSM, recognizing their role in holistic student development. Vice Chancellor Dr. Teng Waninga, present at the ceremony, commended the CSM for its contributions to campus life and encouraged the new leaders to continue fostering a vibrant and inclusive community.

This leadership transition occurs against the backdrop of UOG's recent achievements and challenges. In January 2025, the university celebrated its 28th graduation ceremony, conferring degrees to a record 1,775 students, including 1,009 teacher graduates. This milestone reflects UOG's resilience and commitment to education, especially following the 2022 earthquake that damaged key infrastructure.  The government's allocation of K30 million for reconstruction efforts underscores the institution's significance in Papua New Guinea's educational landscape.

Looking Ahead

As the Catholic Students Movement embarks on a new chapter under Jerome John and Desmond Peter's leadership, the organization is poised to deepen its impact on campus and beyond. With a renewed focus on service, spiritual growth, and community engagement, the CSM aims to be a beacon of faith and leadership at the University of Goroka.
