China: Sanyuan Diocese Marks National Day and 400 Years of Catholicism in Shaanxi

Bishop Han Yingjin leads prayers at the Sanyuan Diocese’s Jubilee and 400th anniversary art exhibition on September 26, 2025.

The Catholic Diocese of Sanyuan, in Shaanxi province, China, celebrated both the Jubilee of National Day and the 400th anniversary of Catholicism in Shaanxi with a special calligraphy and painting exhibition on September 26, 2025, at the Cathedral.

The event, themed “Ink and Brush to Praise the Flourishing Era, Colors to Extol China,” brought together government officials, artists, and Church representatives in a spirit of cultural and spiritual unity, according to Faith Press.

Bishop Han Yingjin opened the celebration with a prayer for world peace, national prosperity, and the well-being of all people. Guests from the United Front Work Department of the Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission, and Sanyuan County authorities joined the faithful in marking the double jubilee.

Prominent artists, including Zhang Shan, Shi Xinjian, and Pang Jin, joined other cultural figures in speeches and live demonstrations. The Sanyuan Diocese Art Troupe added a vibrant cultural performance, expressing the community’s love for the nation and gratitude for a flourishing society.

A key moment of the event was the unveiling of a statue and monument to Wang Zheng, the Ming Dynasty agricultural scientist who first introduced Catholicism to Shaanxi. Bishop Han, alongside scholars and artists, presided over the solemn ceremony honoring his legacy.

The live calligraphy and painting sessions showcased the talent of leading artists, whose works were warmly received by participants. Many praised the vitality and grandeur of the pieces, which reflected both cultural pride and spiritual devotion.

In recent years, under Bishop Han’s guidance, Sanyuan Diocese has hosted ten similar events, using calligraphy and traditional arts as a means of embedding patriotism and faith into visible, practical expressions. These initiatives are seen as part of the diocese’s efforts to advance the Sinicization of religion.

Professor Liu Zhiqing of Anyang Normal University observed that such events creatively integrate tradition and modernity, East and West. He highlighted six distinctive features of the initiative: strong leadership, clear themes, precise positioning, wide participation, silent influence, and praise for the times.

In his concluding remarks, Bishop Han expressed gratitude to government leaders, artists, clergy, and faithful for their support. He affirmed the Church’s commitment to walk the path of Sinicization with perseverance and confidence.

The joyful celebration concluded with the beat of festive drums and the laughter of participants, marking a memorable milestone for both Church and society in Shaanxi, Faith Press reported.
