India: Mumbai Priest Marks 50 Years, Calls Vocation a “Blank Check” in God’s Hands
As the Church marked the World Day of Prayer for Vocations on April 26, a Mumbai priest who recently celebrated 50 years of priesthood described his ordination promise as a “blank check” entrusted to God.
Fr. Cleophas Fernandes, a priest of the Archdiocese of Bombay in western India and currently director of the Snehalaya Family Service Centre, marked his golden jubilee with a Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra, on April 25.
The Eucharistic celebration was attended by Archbishop John Rodrigues of Bombay, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop emeritus of Bombay, Archbishop-emeritus Felix Machado of Vasai, and auxiliary bishops Stephen Fernandes and Alwyn D'Silva, along with more than 30 priests.
Reflecting on his five decades of priesthood, Fr. Cleophas described it as a journey shaped by trust in God. Holding up his ordination card, which bears the handwritten words, “I am ready to go with you,” he said these words have guided his life and ministry.
“When I chose these words, I did not fully realize how seriously the Lord would take them,” he said. “I did not specify where, how far, or under what circumstances. It was as though I had signed a blank check and placed it in God’s hands, saying, ‘You fill in the rest. I am ready to go with You.’”
He said his priestly life has included both challenges and moments of grace, noting that he often experienced God’s presence even in times of weakness. He also spoke of pastoral encounters, especially with families facing difficulties, which deepened his understanding of human suffering and strengthened his ministry.
Fr. Cleophas emphasized that priesthood involves both giving and receiving, particularly through the faith and resilience of the people he serves. Speaking about the sacrament of reconciliation, he described the confessional as a place where priests are called to reveal God’s mercy rather than judgment.
Over the years, Fr. Cleophas has held several key roles in the archdiocese, including director of catechetics, director of the pastoral center, and rector of the archdiocesan seminary.
Reflecting on Fr Cleophas’s fifty-year ministry, Archbishop John Rodrigues acknowledged his work with catechists, seminarians, and families, noting that these ministries have strengthened faith formation and family life. He also highlighted the “Faith Quest” catechetical series that Fr. Cleophas produced in collaboration with priests, which continues to serve as a key resource for catechesis.
He said that in all his responsibilities, Fr. Cleophas has offered not only his service but himself, contributing to the growth of the Church through committed leadership and vision.
In a personal reflection, Archbishop John said: “I recall my own mother, after she was widowed, becoming a member of the Fraternity of Our Lady of the Resurrection. At that time, Fr. Cleophas was a young priest serving as their spiritual director. With sensitivity and compassion, he guided this group of widows, helping them discern the deeper meaning of God’s call even within the reality of loss and motherhood. In every situation, he has sought to strengthen faith and to become a bearer of hope for others.”
The archbishop also pointed to Fr. Cleophas’ pastoral sensitivity, especially in accompanying families and individuals in their daily struggles. He described him as a priest who “walks with the Lord and with His people,” reflecting a ministry marked by accompaniment, compassion, and faith.
