India: Odisha’s Kandhamal Son Named Auxiliary Bishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar
The Catholic Church in Odisha is celebrating a moment of great pride as one of Kandhamal’s own, Fr. Rabindra Kumar Ranasingh, has been appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar. Pope Leo XIV announced the appointment on November 22, bringing joy and renewed hope to a region whose resilient faith has long stood as a witness amid trials.
Church leaders, clergy, and lay faithful across the state have warmly welcomed the news, describing the bishop-elect as a committed pastor, a scholar, and a son of Kandhamal whose life reflects the perseverance and deep spirituality of his people.
“With hearts full of joy and gratitude, we rejoice in the appointment of our new shepherd,” said Bipra Charan Nayak, former president of the Kandhamal Survivor Association. “Bishop-elect Ranasingh’s appointment is a gift to the entire community. It marks a moment of renewed hope for our diocese.”
Fr. Ajay Kumar Singh, a priest, advocate, and human rights activist, notes: “The task ahead is significant: to accompany and support fellow priests and religious, and to strengthen their collective mission of empowering the People of God.”
“May his leadership bring renewed commitment and grace to the Archdiocese.”
A Shepherd Rooted in Kandhamal
Born on July 9, 1972, in Kasabasa under Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Bamunigam, Kandhamal, Bishop-elect Ranasingh is the son of Janas and Helena Ranasingh.
He studied philosophy at Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune, and theology at Khristo Jyoti Institute, Sambalpur. He was ordained a priest on April 18, 2001, at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish, Daringbadi.
The bishop-elect later obtained a doctorate from the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome.
A Mentor’s Blessing
Fr. Anselm Biswal, former Vicar General of the archdiocese and now 91, recalled his early encounter with the bishop-elect.
“I personally recruited him as a student for Rushimal Mission Boys’ Hostel,” he said. “Even as a young boy, he showed exceptional qualities—discipline, hard work, and deep spirituality. All glory to God.”
