Bangladesh bishops release guidelines for Holy Week observance

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh has released its guidelines for the clergy and the faithful on the observance of Holy Week liturgies and rituals amid the new coronavirus pandemic.

The celebration of Palm Sunday was done without the traditional blessing of palms and religious procession. 

In the coming days, the following have to be observed.

Chrism Mass: The bishop of each diocese may celebrate the Chrism Mass on the date already fixed or on another day, depending on the circumstances of his territory.

Holy Thursday: The Maundy Thursday ceremony is to be held without the Washing of the Feet. At the end of the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament is to be kept in the Tabernacle. There will be no Adoration.

Good Friday:  On Good Friday, ceremonies will be observed without the Way of the Cross and the Veneration of the Cross. The Veneration of the Cross may be celebrated on the Feast of the “Exaltation of the Holy Cross” on September 7.

Easter Vigil: The Easter Vigil is to be celebrated without the blessing and the procession of the Light. Exulted and three Readings, including the Gospel, are added. The blessing of the baptismal water and the "Renewal of Baptismal Promises" are maintained as usual.

Easter Sunday: Easter Sunday need to be celebrated with great solemnity. However, if one cannot participate in the Easter Mass for a reason, then one can participate in a Live Mass on the internet.

Those who have no chance for Confession can ask forgiveness at home, sincerely repenting on their sins. 

Bishops will offer a general absolution on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., that will be broadcast online.
