Cost of Discipleship

May 24, 2025 Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Daily Readings: Acts 16: 1-1; John 15: 18-21

The first reading today highlights that mission is not merely about fervor, but about discernment. Paul and his companions are ready to preach everywhere, but the Spirit guides them selectively. This clearly underscores the importance of seeking and following spiritual guidance in our decisions and actions.

Paul undertakes his journeys with great zeal, reflecting his passion for spreading the Gospel. Yet, it is the Spirit who redirects him to Macedonia through a vision. Paul’s immediate response demonstrates his obedience over personal ambition. His partnership with Timothy also emphasizes the importance of mentoring and encouraging the younger generation for the future. Are we attuned to the directions of the Spirit?

John 15:18–21 records Jesus’ words to his disciples about facing persecution and hatred from the world. He explains that this hatred arises because they do not belong to the world, just as He does not. Today’s world is filled with chaos, confusion, disorder, and sin. Jesus has brought us out of these, and His mission continues. His words encourage us to stand firm in our faith, even when faced with adversity. It is high time we cultivate such spiritual resilience. This may invite misunderstanding or rejection, but Jesus offers us profound comfort: when we suffer for our faith, we participate in His own sufferings. Therefore, we must ask for the grace to embrace trials and persecutions as a mark of fidelity to Christ — responding not with fear, but with love.

Call to Action for Catholic Living:

  • Be prepared to face opposition or criticism in your faith life.
  • Learn to respond to it graciously and courageously.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
