An Eye for an Eye and a Tooth for a Tooth

June 19, Monday of the 11th week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings:2 Corinthians 6:1-10; Gospel: Mathew: 5:38-42

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.  This idiom comes from the ancient Mesopotamian Empire during Hammurabi's rule in the 18th century BC. It is stated that if a man destroys the eye of another, they shall destroy his eye too. Does punishment work? Does it make it better or worse? Does revenge change the person or the situation?

Today’s gospel invites us not to oppose evil with evil. If everyone does what they have done, the world will be filled with wounded people. The cycle of getting hurt and hurting others will just be our daily solution to every little or greater suffering one inflicts on others, and making a difference will be a more significant challenge for all of us.

In the first reading, St. Paul sets an example of how to make a difference and be a gentle lamb amid wolves. Our simple way of receiving criticism is one way of making a difference, a sincere smile to those who hurt us, a simple greeting to those who ignore us.

There are other ways to respond. Some people needed to feel forgiven to be able to embrace the mercy of God and also show mercy to others.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
