From a Mother’s Grief to Her Children’s Dreams, Vailankanni Offers a Family Hope
For S. Josphin, a widowed mother from Odisha in eastern India, devotion to Our Lady of Good Health is a source of strength as she raises her children and entrusts their future to God.
During a family pilgrimage to the Marian shrine in Vailankanni, Tamil Nadu, on October 21, she spoke of the pain of losing her husband and the faith that sustains her as her children prepare for their professional lives.
“Our Lady of Good Health, Mother Mary of Vailankanni, is ready to accompany me. She intercedes for me as I face the reality of losing my husband. In times of difficulty, pain and agony, I turn to her for strength to bring up my children. She always leads us to Jesus, our hope and our strength,” she said.
Her testimony reflects a family's journey through bereavement, education and uncertainty, sustained by prayer and devotion to Mary.
For Josphin and her children, the pilgrimage is not only an expression of gratitude for the faith they have inherited but also an opportunity to entrust their hopes and struggles to God.
S. John, the children's uncle, said devotion to Mary has been part of the family's life since childhood.
“Being a Catholic family, our devotion to Mother Mary has been with us from the beginning. My parents always took us to Vailankanni during sickness, hardship and difficult times to seek Mother Mary's intercession,” he said.
“We have received healing and consolation through Mother Mary of Vailankanni,” he added.
That tradition continues as the family faces the challenges of building a future after the loss of Josphin's husband, S. Vincent.
Three young lives, three professional paths
Despite the family's hardships, the children's educational journeys reflect determination and the hope of contributing to society through their chosen professions.
S. David Abhisek, 24, has completed a Bachelor of Technology degree in aerospace engineering at Centurion University of Technology and Management in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Born in Jatani on December 15, 2001, he is seeking employment as he prepares to begin his career in the aerospace sector.
David belongs to the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar.
His younger brother, S. Thomas, 23, is in the final year of a B.Tech degree in computer science at the same university. Born in Palasa, Andhra Pradesh, on April 28, 2003, he is preparing to complete his studies and seek employment in the technology sector. He belongs to the Diocese of Srikakulam.
Their academic pursuits represent years of effort and the hope of translating specialized education into professional opportunities.
S. Monika, born in Jatani on August 4, 2008, is pursuing a diploma in operation theatre technology. The daughter of S. Fransis and S. Sujata, she belongs to the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar.
Her training is preparing her to support surgical teams and contribute to patient care, a field that requires technical competence, discipline and teamwork.
Together, the young people are pursuing careers in aerospace engineering, computer science and health care, different fields united by the potential to serve society through knowledge and professional skills.
Behind these aspirations is the perseverance of a mother who must navigate the demands of raising her children while coping with the loss of her husband.
David faces the challenge of finding his first suitable job, Thomas must complete his degree and establish his career, and Monika must continue her professional training. Their pilgrimage brings these hopes and uncertainties into the family's life of prayer.
A devotion that leads to Christ
Located on India's southeastern coast in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district, Vailankanni is one of the country's best-known Catholic pilgrimage centers. The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health draws pilgrims from across India and beyond, including people who come seeking consolation in sickness, grief and other difficulties.
For Catholics across Asia, Marian shrines offer places where personal struggles and family hopes find expression in prayer. The devotion to Mary, in Catholic teaching, ultimately points believers toward Jesus Christ.
For Josphin, this relationship is deeply personal. Her faith does not erase the pain of widowhood or guarantee an easy future for her children. Instead, she finds in Mary's maternal accompaniment the courage to continue raising them and the strength to entrust their lives to Christ.
The family's experience also offers a reflection for young Catholics facing the uncertainties of education, employment and adult life: faith and perseverance can accompany the pursuit of personal goals, while professional abilities can become ways of serving others.
As the family leaves Vailankanni, the challenges ahead remain. But the pilgrimage renews a tradition passed down through generations, turning to Mary in times of hardship and allowing her to lead them to Jesus, whom Josphin identifies as their hope and strength.
Their story is a reminder that faith does not promise a life without suffering. It offers a way to face suffering with courage, sustain hope through uncertainty and continue working toward a future entrusted to God.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
